It seems far too early for cold and flu season but I have certainly been feeling under the weather lately.
In the past 2 years, I recall feeling the onset of several colds but none actually took me down like this pesky virus I’m fighting now.
I’ve been busting out the big guns to keep this cold from getting worse and I want to share some of my tricks with you- they are probably the oldest in the book but they really help with symptom relief.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
I.am.addicted. Here are my favorite ways to use eucalyptus oil:
- Sprinkle a few drops in a hot shower and inhale the steam.
- Add a couple drops to almond oil and rub the mixture across your sternum to relieve nighttime congestion.
- I put a few drops onto a towel and place it on my pillow before sleeping.
A Neti pot is a natural, Ayurvedic cleansing technique to help rinse the nasal and sinus cavities. Follow the instructions on the box and be sure to boil your water then let it cool to room temperature (or buy distilled). Tip: don’t use a Neti pot when nasal passages are blocked. With regular use, a Neti pot might help ward off colds and flu before they start!
Grate some fresh ginger into a boiling pot of water and create a tea. I have also been turning to Traditional Medicinals for Gypsy Cold Care and Breathe Easy for some relief. Apparently a tea made of fresh thyme leaves also works wonders.
This herb is a staple in my house. I take it at the first sign of a cold and it definitely seems to shorten the duration and severity. Make sure you check with your doctor for potential interactions first.
Lots and lots (and lots) of water! You can also add some lemon to help flush the system.
An essential for dry winter weather, a humidifier keeps nasal passages moist and creates an environment that is not ideal for viruses. This year we busted out the humidifier earlier than usual but with evening temperatures in the 30’s, it’s definitely time.
Open a window, sit outside in the sunshine, go for a short walk, the fresh air is great for you and helps prevent others in your household from getting sick.
