Pantry Staple: Apple Cider Vinegar

Awhile back, I huffed & puffed my way through a spin class with an instructor who sported a bowl cut and a shirt longer than his shorts.  While on his high horse bike, he so graciously decided to give the class diet advice.  His first piece: if you have a sweet craving, put apple cider vinegar in your water and he guaranteed we would no longer want the ice cream (he obviously doesn’t know me).  His second piece of advice: use Splenda and Equal in place of sugar because everything else is poison.

I almost fell off my bike.  How could such brilliance be followed by such ignorance?

I will save the artificial sweetener discussion for another day; instead I want to introduce a staple that has been in my pantry for 7 years.

Bragg’s Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar

A teaspoon or two a day makes so many ailments go away.  I take it every morning in a half-full shot glass and chase it with a glass of water. Watch out for this wild woman!

I knew a spry & healthy little lady named Sophie who drank apple cider vinegar everyday until the age of 97 when she passed away in her sleep.  Not too shabby.

The yuck factor

There is a tart, sour, potent disgustingness that accompanies apple cider vinegar but eventually you will get used to it.  If you don’t, try adding a teaspoon to a large glass of water with a little honey.  You actually should dilute it before consuming, but for me that prolongs the grossness.

When to take it:*

If you had a sugar binge and now your candida (yeast) balance is off.  You can recognize a candida overgrowth if your tongue has a white film.

If your stomach is upset and you don’t know why, ACV can help ward off food poisoning.  Really!

Taking ACV every morning will help you feel great all day long.

Do you ever have those days when you are constantly hungry?  A little apple cider vinegar can help ward off cravings and hunger.

Use it in sauces and dressings.  Yesterday, I added it to homemade BBQ sauce and I often add it to homemade salad dressings.

Apple cider vinegar aids in digestion and helps your body break down a fattening and filling meal.  It can ward off heart burn and indigestion so you can toss that nasty pink bottle of whatever you keep on hand now.

It is an important part of a detox program as it helps restore balance and purify internal organs.

When you have a weird skin ailment ACV can restore balance and relive discomfort but, fair warning, it won’t make you smell like roses!

If you often find yourself knocked off your feet with a cold or the flu, apple cider vinegar might help you stay healthy.  Taking ACV and Echinacea at the first sign of a cold helped me avoid the sniffles even while working retail at Christmas during the Swine Flu outbreak.  Yup.

There you have it.  I swear by apple cider vinegar and it is a staple in our house.  There is plenty of information available online to help you make a decision about incorporating  this magical ingredient into your daily routine so check it out and let me know what you decide!

*Disclaimer:  I take it and find it works well to make me feel better and balanced without OTC medications, these suggestions may not be right for you so be sure to proceed with caution or ask your doc.
